Proficiency grading changes a lot of student’s opinions. Students from all different grades and ages think that proficiency is so much harder than the normal grading system. Most of the students/children think that normal grading is much more easier because when you get more than one question wrong the grade doesn’t change so easily, but for proficiency grading if you get one question wrong it changes from an A to a B and if you get more than two questions wrong your grade changes from lower than a B to a C. I interviewed 6th and 7th graders. The Interview questions were: do you like the proficiency grading, is the proficiency grading easier than the normal grading or is the normal grading easier than the proficiency grading, and why do you not like the proficiency grading and why do you? For question number one a lot of the students said that they don’t like the grading system, but only few said that it was ok but mostly they did not like it. For question number two most of the students said that the ABC grading was so much easier and they can understand it much more better and they don’t get confused as often as they do now. Some of the kids said that both proficiency and the normal are easy at the same time and they both are not. For the third and final question kids said that they don’t like proficiency grading system because you can only miss one problem if you want a good score, but for normal grading you can miss up to 10% and it still doesn’t reduce your letter grade. This is why students should make a change saying that they don’t want to have proficiency grading and that normal grading is much more understandable and easy for the student and teachers and that most of the student agreed on having regular grading system and not the proficiency grading level.
