The Oprah Winfrey show or The Ellen Degeneres show? Which one is better? After surveying Stoller students, it looks like Ellen’s entertaining humor is more appealing to middle school students than Oprah’s often depressing adult subjects. But many students like both. 50% of the students I surveyed said they enjoy Ellen’s show more than Oprah’s. 40% Like both Ellen and Oprah. Another 10% said they don’t like either of them. Which leaves the votes for the Oprah Winfrey show at 0%.
I asked Apoorva A why she liked Ellen better she said “Well Oprah is boring and Ellen is funny”
she also added “I love the games Ellen plays on her show.” Many people would argue the fact that Oprah is “boring” one student says that Oprah “provides a different point of view on subjects that keep the audience entertained” On the other hand most all middle schoolers would agree that Ellen is funny. Dana B says that “Ellen is not your regular talk show host she brings pure enjoyment to every episode.” and another student says “I like Ellen better because she interacts with the audience more.” Ellen Degeneres along with her talk show has recently entered the judging panel on the very famous show, American Idol. Some students think thats why Ellen is more appealing to Middle Schoolers.
From an adults point of view on Ellen and Oprah, it could go either way. I asked one teacher what he thought about Ellen and he responded by saying “Ellen is so positive, we need more of that in todays media.” maybe the difference is the humor that Ellen brings to her audience everyday, which Oprah doesn’t. Although Oprah got a few votes by the students who said they like both, I think most students would have to agree with the statement,“I would rather laugh than cry.” Sorry Oprah, but Ellen’s got the edge on this one.
