2010 FIFA World Cup

South Africa
By: Hunter Pinson

It is 2010 and the FIFA World Cup is finally back in action in South Africa. South Africa is thrilled to be hosting one of the worlds greatest sporting events! I for one am jumping up and down in my seat waiting for the World Cup. However, I'm not the only one. Gal K., an eighth grader here at Stoller says that he can't wait and most definably will watch it attentively. He is cheering for the Argentinians, but thinks that Brazil will end up taking home the trophy. Another anonymous person says that she is excited for the World Cup. She hopes that USA will win. Although she thinks that this is unlikely and that England will win. I am so very excited for the cup and hope that the Netherlands wins it all. I believe that when the day is done though, that Spain will be crowned king.

This excitement for the 2010 FIFA world cup is everywhere, not only nation wide, but globally. More so even in other countries because we (United States) don't take soccer too seriously. The World Cup has been thrilling and new every time. This prestigious tournament of countries is also extremely highly anticipated because it is so huge and only happens once every four years. The cup is also an opportunity for smaller countries as well as large countries to thrive. Merchandising sales boom at this time. I have noticed a major increase in soccer advertising this year because of the World Cup. The FIFA World Cup is the ultimate soccer tournament between countries. It works in a special way.

What many people don't realize is that all countries do not participate in the World Cup. At first, you actually have to qualify for the World Cup by playing in a special league between countries in your region. If you end this league in the top few places, you can get into the World Cup. Teams cannot make the World Cup unless they do this. Then, once the teams have qualified for the tournament they draw groups. This is when tournament officials get together and pull names out of a hat and put them into brackets. These brackets are the opening pools of the World Cup. The top two teams in each group move on to a single elimination format for the rest of the World Cup. Now that you know what the World Cup is, how it is important, and why you should watch it, I hope you use this newly obtained knowledge to have a great experience watching it.
