Why do kids need a $200 phone?

Believe it or not, the iPhone has become a very popular phone among teens.

Ten, twenty years ago, people didn't even understand the concept of a cell phone or even a computer. Nowadays it's a given that families all over the United States have at least one computer and one cell phone. Also, it is very rare to find a teenager without an electronic device on them. So, why is a toy so expensive so cool?
Jaime N says it's because it's better than other phones and, "It's addicting." One reason it's so popular and addicting because you can do other things on it too. Gaming apps and the internet are a common use of the iPhone because you can play them anywhere and you have all of them right at your finger tips. On regular cell phones you can't do much, only calling and texting, but it also doesn't cost as much. Jaime N explains, "My parents pay for it all." and when I questioned about why her parents pay for such an expensive phone she says, "They needed a way to get in touch with me." More like a very cool and hi-tech way to get in touch. Most people I've talked to say their parents pay for their phone like Christy G who says, "If my parents didn't pay for my phone I wouldn't have one."
Most iPhone users are "pros" at using their iPhones and they know all about the apps. Jaime N's favorite app is the Facebook app and she likes it so much because you know what everyone is doing right now. After interviewing my mom, I found out that her favorite app is the Calendar app that comes with the iPhone because she can program easily all her clients with alarms, into a handheld device.
The iPhone is a very smart device, but it is not necessarily needed in kids' lives. Sure, it's cool to have a phone to get in touch with parents, but the iPhone is clearly not entirely meant for that. IPhones are definitely handy for adults but not needed in teenager's lives.
